The Over The River exhibition date continues to be temporarily postponed due to pending litigation. However, Christo has just presented an exciting new work of art: Big Air Package. This museum installation was conceived in 2010 and created especially for the Gasometer Oberhausen in Germany. Installed inside the 384-foot-high industrial building, Big Air Package is Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s third air package and the largest indoor sculpture ever created.
“You are virtually swimming in light inside the Big Air Package,” Christo said of his latest work of art. “The inner space is probably the most unique aspect of all the air packages that we did since 1966. When experienced from the inside, that space is almost like a 90-meter-high (295 feet) cathedral.”
Big Air Package, Project for Gasometer Oberhausen, Germany will be on view from March 16 to December 30, 2013. The sculpture installed inside the former gas tank is 295 feet in height and 164 feet in diameter. Big Air Package is made from 219,000 square feet of semitransparent polyester fabric and 14,800 feet of polypropylene rope with a total weight of 5.85 tons. Wolfgang Volz serves as the Big Air Package project director. As with all of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s works of art, the materials will be industrially recycled.
