Christo was pleased to be back in the Rocky Mountain West recently, where he was able to meet with supporters in Cañon City and Salida, as well as with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. Christo also presented lectures at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and at the Albuquerque Museum in New Mexico. A highlight of the trip was Christo rafting Bighorn Sheep Canyon for the first time.
Many of you know that Over The River has already received permission from the Federal Government, Colorado State Parks, the State Land Board and Fremont County, Colorado, where most of the project will be installed.
Christo is now waiting for challenges filed against the state and federal governments for permits granted to Over The River to work their way through the legal process. In the meantime, he continues paying rent on the project area to the Bureau of Land Management, as well as funding bighorn sheep habitat enhancements and research that is telling state and federal agencies more about those sheep than has ever been known before.
Over the past 20 years that Christo has been working on Over The River, he has boated across the river many times for measurements and technical planning. During this trip, Christo was delighted to do something he’s never done: Leisurely raft the river!
