Soma (Carisoprodol)



Soma belongs to a group of muscle relaxants. The mechanism of its action is due to block of nerve impulses (or pain), which is sent to the brain from the peripheral nervous system. In 2007 the drug was initially approved by management on control over quality of foodstuff and medicines (FDA, USA). Manufacturer is Meda Pharmaceuticals Company. The drug is released in the form of tablets of 250 and 350 mg for oral administration.


Muscle relaxant effect was observed after 30 minutes and a maximum duration of 6 hours. The drug is metabolized by liver via the cytochrome P450 oxidase and is excreted through the kidneys. The half-life reaches eight hours.

The main part of carisoprodol breaks down in meprobamate — well known narcotic substance.

Indications for use

Soma is indicated for pain in striated (skeletal) muscles.

It is used in complex treatment (in combination with rest and physiotherapy) of wounds and injuries of muscle tissue.

Mechanism of action

The drug inhibits inter-neuronal transmission of a pulse in the reticular formation of the spinal cord. It is used in combination with other drugs to treat the loss of elasticity of peppered striped muscles, and with the aim of eliminating arising pain.

Drug contraindications

Carisoprodol is contraindicated in case of:

  • Acute intermittent porphyria.

Kidney and liver diseases. If necessary, before the application of Soma you are recommended a specialist. In this case, a doctor can prescribe the drug in a reduced dose and under supervision throughout the course of therapy.

Pregnancy and lactation. When it is absolutely necessary, you may ask your doctor for advice, because the effect of the drug on the fetus and the possibility of falling into breast milk are not proven.

  • Children up to 12 years.

According to the fact that the drug may cause drowsiness, headache or dizziness, it should not be used when driving a car or operating mechanisms on the production.

It is forbidden to take the drug in combination with sedatives (tranquilizers), antihistamines, and alcohol-containing drinks.

Method of use

Soma must be taken in strict compliance with the prescription of a treating physician and the enclosed instructions. Every pill is taken with 200 ml of liquid.

Maximum daily dose is 1,400 mg. This corresponds to the reception of 1 tablet (last reception is before bedtime) three or four times a day. The dose and dosage regimen depends on the physical condition and pathology.

A failure to comply with the schedule of reception should not be compensated with additional loss pill. The interval between doses should not exceed 4 hours.

Soma is stored in a cool and dry place, without sunlight and in places inaccessible to children and pets.

Side effects

Common side effects are Soma:

  • dizziness;
  • headache
  • insomnia or vice versa drowsiness.

Other side effects

  • anxiety;
  • dry mouth;
  • nervousness;
  • irritability;
  • heartburn;
  • nausea;
  • numbness of the feet, hands and in the region of nasolabial triangle;
  • pain or discomfort in the chest region;
  • sweating;

If you take Soma more than two or three weeks, you may notice signs of psychological dependence and addiction to the drug. Patients who have abused carisoprodol or alcohol and drugs usually have psychological dependence.

Symptoms of Soma overdose include low blood pressure (weakness, fatigue, confusion), shallow breathing and fainting.
